Poster Competition

The symposium will include a poster competition highlighting outstanding computational work from U-M students and postdocs. First place is awarded $500, and second $300 and third place wins $200.

To enter the competition, please register for the symposium and submit the title, description and authors of your poster by filling out the registration form.

Poster Competition Guidelines

MICDE’s Annual Poster Competition highlights the outstanding computational work from U-M. All posters with a computational science component are welcome to present, but only those  of current students and postdocs will be part of the competition. Deadline to submit an abstract and the pdf version of the poster is March 15, 2018 at 5:00 p.m.

To register:

  1. REGISTRATION: Please complete the symposium registration form and submit the title, description and authors of your poster.
  2. PDF VERSION: Once you register, you will have until March 15, 2018 at 5:00 p.m. to submit a pdf version of your poster in order to be part of the competition. PDFs should be sent to
  3. PRINTING: MICDE will cover the costs of printing your poster IF you print it at GroundWorks (Duderstadt Center)
    • GroundWorks prints posters Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. only. Let them know you are printing for the MICDE Symposium on March 22, 2018.
    • Please plan to print your poster 3’ x 4’ landscape.
    • MICDE will provide poster boards, easels, and push pins for your use.
    • The judges will visit posters to talk to you between 12-2:00 pm
  5. Competition winners will be announce after the last talk of the symposium.

In 2017, Victor Wu, Industrial and Operations Engineering, won first place for his poster “Multicriteria Optimization for Brachytherapy Treatment Planning.” Co-authors were Marina Epelman, Mustafa Sir, Kalyan Pasupathy, Michael Herman and Christopher Duefel.

The second place poster was from Sambit Das of Mechanical Engineering: “Large Scale Electronic Structure Studies on the Energetics of Dislocations in Al-Mg Materials System and Its Connection to Mesoscale Models” with co-author Vikram Gavini.

Third place went to Joseph Cicchese, Chemical Engineering, for “How to optimize tuberculosis antibiotic treatments using a computational granuloma model” with co-authors Elsje Pienaar, Denise E. Kirschner, Jennifer J. Linderman.

Approximately 50 posters were submitted for last year’s competition. View this spreadsheet to see all the titles and abstracts.
