SUMMARY:POSTPONED - MICDE/EEB Seminar: Yun Song\, Professor\, Computer Science and Statistics\, University of California\, Berkeley
DESCRIPTION:Bio: Yun S. Song is a professor of EECS and Statistics. He received the BS degrees in mathematics and physics from MIT\, and a PhD in physics from Stanford University. After his PhD\, he spent a year at the Mathematical Institute at the University of Oxford\, where he decided to change fields. He became a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Statistics at Oxford\, and started doing research in computational biology and mathematical population genetics. From 2004 to 2007\, he was a postdoctoral researcher at UC Davis in the Department of Computer Science\, and the Section of Evolution and Ecology. \nThe key parameters that govern translation efficiency\nTranslation of mRNA into protein is a fundamental biological process mediated by the flow of ribosomes on mRNA transcripts.  With multiple factors that can potentially affect its efficiency\, this transport process is highly complex and heterogeneous: different mRNAs can have different initiation rates\, local elongation rates can vary substantially along the mRNA\, and multiple ribosomes can simultaneously translate the same mRNA\, potentially leading to interference.  In this talk\, I will present new theoretical results on a probabilistic model of mRNA translation which allowed us to identify the key parameters that govern the overall rate of protein synthesis\, sensitivity to initiation rate changes\, and efficiency of ribosome usage.  I will then describe our ongoing study\, which combines in vitro translation experiments with mathematical modeling\, to elucidate the role of the 5′ UTR (particularly uAUGs and uORFs) in regulating translation initiation in eukaryotes.

DESCRIPTION:Bio:  Dr. Murat Eren is an Assistant Professor in the department of Medicine and affiliated with the Marine Biological Laboratory at the University of Chicago. He received his B.S. from Canakkale Onsekiz Mart University in Turkey in 2002\, and his PhD from the University of New Orleans in 2001\, both in computer science. His research focuses on the diversity and functioning of microbial communities in environments ranging from the human gastrointestinal tract and oral cavity\, to sewages\, oceans\, and soils. He designs algorithms and experiments to better understand microbes and their ecology. He pursues interesting ecological and evolutionary questions\, with some particularly interesting insights from molecular data into what constitutes a population in the microbial world. \nInsights into ecology and evolution of microbial populations through single-amino acid variants\nNeither the mechanisms by which genomic heterogeneity emerges within naturally occurring microbial populations\, nor how it drives the partitioning of ecological niches are well understood. Yet the increasing number of environmental metagenomes with astonishing depth of sequencing offer new opportunities to investigate evolutionary processes acting upon them\, and link genomic variation to predicted tertiary structures of genes to gain biochemical insights. \nMICDE is co-sponsoring this seminar with the department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. SUMMARY:MICDE Seminar: Jeremy Lichstein\, University of Florida
DESCRIPTION:Bio: Jeremy Lichstein is an assistant professor of Biology at the University of Florida. Professor Lichstein got his Ph. D. from Princeton University and was a postdoctoral research fellow at Princeton’s department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. He was the recipient of the University of Florida Excellence Award for Assistant Professor\, and was named a Florida Climate Institute Fellow for 2016-2017. His research interests are forest dynamics\, biodiversity\, carbon cycle and climate change. \nBiodiversity and the changing Earth System: computational challenges and new answers to old questions\nTerrestrial ecosystems currently offset roughly 25% of global annual anthropogenic fossil fuel emissions. However\, the fate of this carbon sink is highly uncertain\, in large part because global models diverge in their predictions of ecosystem responses to climate change\, drought\, and other perturbations. Although there is little agreement on how terrestrial ecosystems will respond to global change on decadal and longer time-scales\, there is wide consensus that current global models are overly simplistic in their representation of important ecological processes. I will discuss our current understanding of how tree functional diversity is maintained in forests\, the consequences of including more realistic levels of functional diversity in global models\, and the computational challenges that need to be overcome in order to introduce ecological realism into the Earth System Models that the scientific and policy communities rely on for climate projections. A key result that is emerging from empirical and theoretical studies is that shifts in species composition across time or space (beta diversity) have different (and sometimes opposite) effects on ecosystem stability as local (alpha) diversity. \nThis seminar is co-sponsored by the U-M department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology
