DESCRIPTION:This is a continuation of the workshop “Introduction to performance analysis of scientific software”.  Now\, we know how to measure overall performance of our software and can make a good guess of the main performance bottleneck.  How can we improve the performance? Do we really need to rewrite the whole program in a different language? In this workshop\, we will observe and discuss various methods of performance improvement\, such as using optimized libraries\, multi-language development\, and choosing appropriate algorithms.  In the end\, you will know how to leverage the power of better algorithms and closer-to-metal languages to improve the performance of your software without a total rewrite or hardware upgrades. \n  \nRequirements:  It is recommended to attend “Introduction to performance analysis of scientific software” workshop prior to this one.  If you wish to follow hands-on demonstrations\, you will need to bring your own laptop and have a UMich account.

SUMMARY:Android Application Development: An Overview
DESCRIPTION:Mobile app development is one of the biggest new industries of the last decade. As of 2017\, Google and Apple (the creators of Android and iOS\, respectively) confirmed a combined total of over 3 billion devices around the globe using their mobile operating systems. The capabilities and built-in sensors on modern smartphones also provide a new avenue to collect data or engage with participants in a non-invasive manner. It might seem intimidating to write a mobile app for the first time\, but the process is similar to writing software for a desktop computer\, which in itself isn’t as hard as you might think! \nWe will present a brief overview on developing Android apps\, the differences between Android and iOS development\, and provide quick demonstrations on how you can use a variety of available programming environments and languages to create an app. A basic familiarity with computer programming is recommended to get the most out of the seminar. This is not an in-depth workshop with the intention to have its participants program code alongside the presentation\, but meant to introduce available options for them to consider and to answer questions on the topic. Separate “hands-on” workshops will be provided later in the academic year based on audience feedback.

SUMMARY:Data Visualization With 3D Graphics Using Unity3D and C#
DESCRIPTION:Video game development is more accessible than ever before thanks to modern software tools\, with many options free to download. These tools are also used to program more “serious” applications that require interactive 3D graphics\, from mobile apps\, virtual and augmented reality\, computer vision and artificial intelligence\, and real-time CGI film production.  \n  \nUnity3D is a powerful and popular game engine for both hobbyist and professional projects\, able to compile a ‘game’ to almost any computer platform\, and free to download for non-commercial use. This workshop will show how you can use it to render data from research projects in a 3D interactive representation for user analysis and demonstration. \n  \nIn this workshop\, we introduce the Unity3D workspace\, and prepare a demo that allows the user to load an example dataset and view it as a simple set of 3D representations. A basic familiarity with computer programming (C# will be used during the session) is recommended to get the most out of the workshop. To take part\, users will be responsible to bring their own laptop with Unity3D (available for Windows\, Macintosh and Linux) pre-installed. Additional project files will be provided to registered users ahead of the workshop date.

It’s a good starting point for experienced programmers to build an Android app from scratch. \nWe will present a brief overview of the “Android Studio” environment\, and provide a step-by-step example to make an app with multiple activities and using built-in sensors. A familiarity with the Java programming language is recommended to get the most out of the seminar. Participants who want to program during the workshop are recommended to install “Android Studio” in advance and to bring their own laptops to use during the presentation.

SUMMARY:Multiple testing and large-scale inference in Python
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will cover techniques for conducting large-scale inference\, using Python and its libraries.  We will cover the principals of how large scale inference is different from classical inference\, and why multiple comparisons should usually be accounted for in an analysis.  We will then discuss the Bonferroni method\, Benjamini and Hochberg’s False Discovery Rate (FDR)\, Efron’s local FDR\, the Scheffe approach\, and the knockoff filter.  The motivation for each approach will be covered\, and the process for carrying it out in a data analysis will be discussed in detail.  Several case studies will be used to illustrate these analytic approaches.

SUMMARY:Simulation studies in Python
DESCRIPTION:Simulation studies are used to understand the properties of statistical procedures.  This technique is widely used when conducting power analysis for research studies\,  which is one focus for this workshop.  Simulation studies can also be used to assess the performance of statistical procedures in non-standard settings\, such as when there are concerns about missing data\, selection bias\, measurement errors\, or model specification.  Another role for simulation studies is to contrast the performance of alternative statistical methods\, e.g. for prediction. \nThis workshop will emphasize practical aspects of conducting simulation studies using Python\, including data simulation\, automation\, and interpretation and communication of simulation findings.

DESCRIPTION:This lecture-format workshop will present an overview of available modes and methods of survey data collection as well as an introduction to the survey response process and implications for questionnaire design.  Participants will gain an appreciation of the tradeoffs inherent in survey design decisions and how design can affect data quality and survey errors. Topics will include: \n\nSurvey errors\, in particular measurement\, coverage\, and nonresponse error.\nWhat to consider when selecting a data collection method for a particular research question.\nMeasurement (response) error and how to reduce it through question wording/format and questionnaire structure.\n\nThe role of the interviewer and interviewer effects.

SUMMARY:Dimension Reduction with Python
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will cover dimension reduction techniques for data analysis in Python\, focusing on Principal Component Analysis (PCA)\, factor analysis\, and canonical correlation analysis (CCA).  Depending on audience interest\, dimension reduction regression (e.g. SIR)\, and kernel versions of the classical dimension reduction techniques can also be discussed. \nThe presentation will begin by covering the conceptual basis of these methods\, then we will discuss several case studies.  The Statsmodels\, Sklearn\, Numpy\, and Scipy Python libraries will be used to conduct the analyses.  Visualization of results using Matplotlib and Seaborn will also be covered.

SUMMARY:Statistical analysis with missing data in Python
DESCRIPTION:Missing data arise in many fields of research\, and a large body of statistical tools has been developed to facilitate statistical analysis in the presence of missing data.  Here we focus mainly on multiple imputation\, which is a broadly-applicable approach for working with missing data. We will illustrate through several case studies how multiple imputation allows certain types of missing data to be rigorously accounted for\, while preserving the flexibility to use a variety of familiar statistical tools to account for other aspects of the data.    \nThe analyses presented in this workshop will be performed in Python using the Statsmodels package. All software tools covered in this workshop are free and open source.

DESCRIPTION:Mediation analysis is a set of tools for exploring hypotheses about causal pathways\, with a special focus on differentiating “direct” from “mediated” associations between an exposure and an outcome.  Many approaches to mediation analysis are based on regression analysis. \n In this workshop\, we will cover some of the basic ideas behind regression-based mediation analysis\, and show how this type of analysis can be performed in Python using the Statsmodels package. All software tools covered in this workshop are free and open source.

DESCRIPTION:Google Earth Engine combines a multi-petabyte catalog of satellite imagery and geospatial datasets with planetary-scale analysis capabilities. This hands-on workshop will help you understand the power (and limitation) of GEE for carrying out an end-to-end analysis. \nYou should have some exposure to GEE and remote sensing. We will focus on contemporary environmental issues and learn how to carry out more advanced analysis and visualization in GEE. We will use the web-based IDE for the Earth Engine JavaScript API.

SUMMARY:Survival analysis in Python
DESCRIPTION:Survival analysis is used when working with data that may be censored\, as often is the case in studies of human subjects with incomplete follow-up.  The presence of censoring makes most forms of regression and other standard statistical analyses inappropriate. A body of specialized techniques for analyzing this type of data has been developed\, including methods for estimating and comparing marginal survival functions\, and regression methods including the widely-utilized Cox proportional hazards model.  This workshop will briefly review the key principles of survival analysis\, then illustrate by example how various survival analysis methods can be carried out using Python with the Statsmodels package.  \nParticipants should bring a laptop if they want to work with the examples during the presentation\, but this is optional.

SUMMARY:Mixed Effects Modeling in Stata
DESCRIPTION:We’ll discuss mixed model regression (also known as multi-level models or hierarchical linear models) in this session which is used for repeated measures data or data which has a clustering element.  We’ll start with a theoretical overview\, discuss choosing an appropriate model\, fitting the models\, checking assumptions and post-hoc analysis. We’ll also cover diagnosing convergence issues. Participants should have basic familiarity with Stata and some working knowledge of linear regression (ordinal least squares).
