The Michigan Institute for Computational Discovery and Engineering and the Automotive Research Center announce a joint workshop on Computational Science for Mobile Systems.

Computation has been an integral part of the science and engineering of mobile systems. It has guided solution frameworks of problems from rigid and flexible body dynamics and robotics, through aeromechanics of flying vehicles and nonlinear solid mechanics of crash simulations, to autonomous and cooperative motion of ground, water and airborne vehicles. The field has evolved – thus far – using models and computations of limited complexity. Recent advances in computational and data science makes possible simulations of increasing complexity, leading to rapid decisions with increased confidence levels. We envision a future where computations for mobile systems will use high fidelity simulations, with reduced-dimensionality models, compressed computations, fusion of pre-computed solutions and sensor data, large-scale optimization, formal verification and real-time engineering for decision-making. Many other frameworks are being developed in the context of computational science, which will be incorporated in the future. With the aim of catalyzing collaborative activity in this broad area, MICDE and ARC are interested in novel ideas in the computational science of mobile systems including but not limited to: 

  • Real-time engineering for decision-making
  • Large scale and real-time optimization
  • Compressed computation
  • Dimensionality reduction methods
  • Efficient exploration and discovery of high-fidelity/high-dimensional solutions
  • Computing with heterogeneous data (sensors and simulations)
  • Autonomy of ground, water and airborne systems
  • Safe and resilient autonomy for multi-agent systems
  • Exploration of domains in physical and phase space
  • Novel computational approaches in dynamics, aeromechanics and lightweight materials
  • Formal verification of software for cyber-physical systems
