Zhongming Liu is an Associate Professor and the Associate Department Chair of Graduate Programs in the Biomedical Engineering Department. His research connects neuroscience and artificial intelligence by developing AI models inspired by biological neural systems. Drawing insights from the human brain, he and his team design and train artificial neural networks to be more adaptive, efficient, and interpretable and to provide insights into brain processes underlying perception, action, and cognition. They utilize advanced experimental methods, including magnetic resonance imaging, electrophysiology, and psychophysics, in combination with computational techniques such as deep learning and biophysical modeling. Their interdisciplinary approach enhances our understanding of brain function and supports medical applications in the treatment and management of mental and neurological disorders.
He develops and offers courses on the principles of machine learning, machine learning for biomedical signal and image processing, computational neuroscience, and statistics.
