Grants and Programs
MICDE offers grants and programs that support research, training, and collaboration in computational science and engineering.
These opportunities are designed to support faculty and students, grow bold ideas, connect expertise, and accelerate computational discovery and innovation across campus.
Catalyst Grants
The Catalyst Grant program supports bold, early-stage computational research with the potential to open new scientific directions and enable high-impact external proposals. Projects may explore novel methods, tackle emerging challenges, and foster interdisciplinary collaborations.
- Open to UM faculty
- Focus on methods in scientific computing, modeling, AI/ML for science, or emerging computing paradigms
- Awards fund 1-year projects
- Calls are issued annually, in the winter/spring
Kaul Fellows Program
The Kaul Fellows Program provides summer research opportunities for senior undergraduate and graduate students working on a specific computational science research project.
- Faculty nominate students
- Fellows receive funding to conduct focused research during the summer
- Projects must involve computation and be supervised by UM faculty
- Fellows present their work at the end of the program
Distinguished Visiting Fellows
The Distinguished Visiting Fellows program supports visits by internationally recognized researchers whose work advances MICDE’s mission. Fellows are hosted by UM faculty for collaborative research and academic engagement.
- Faculty must submit an expression of interest to host
- Visits typically range from 3 weeks to 3 months
- Fellows give public lectures, seminars, and interact with UM researchers
- Financial support is provided jointly by MICDE and the host unit
Research Scholars Program
This Research Scholars Program supports postdoctoral researchers working in computational science and engineering, AI for science, and high-performance computing.
- Initial appointments are for two years
- MICDE provides 50% of the scholar’s salary plus research and travel funds
- Scholars are expected to engage with the MICDE community through research and events
