Distinguished Visiting Fellow Program

This program brings leading researchers to the University of Michigan to engage in collaborative work at the intersection of computation, AI, and HPC

The Distinguished Visiting Fellow Program brings internationally-recognized scholars to the University of Michigan for extended visits, to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and strengthen the University’s leadership in computational discovery and innovation.

The program aims to:

  • Advance collaborative research between visiting scholars and U-M faculty.
  • Enrich the computational research environment at the University of Michigan.
  • Contribute to the development of new ideas and approaches in computational science and engineering.
  • Create mentorship and learning opportunities for students and postdocs.

Program Structure

The program supports flexible visits designed to foster collaboration, academic exchange, and active engagement across the University of Michigan.

Key components of the visit include:

  • Fellow visits typically range from 3 weeks to 3 months, with flexible scheduling depending on the fellow’s availability and the host department’s needs.
  • Activities include public lectures, technical talks, and research collaboration. Fellows generally give at least one public seminar during their visit.
  • MICDE offers financial and logistical support in partnership with the host unit.
  • Fellows are expected to engage with faculty, students, and research groups across campus.

Expressions of Interest

MICDE welcomes expressions of interest from MICDE-affiliated faculty who wish to host a Distinguished Visiting Fellow.

Expressions of interest should include:

  • Host and nominee’s details
  • A brief description of their research area and potential for collaboration
  • A short statement on their relevance to MICDE’s mission

Following review, selected nominators will be invited to submit a formal nomination that includes:

  • Confirmation of the nominee’s interest in participating
  • A proposed visit timeframe
  • An overview of the nominee’s planned activities
