1. STUDENT OWNED COMPUTER (laptop, iPad, computer peripherals): students have to buy the equipment on their own and get reimbursed by MICDE. Even if owned by the student, the computer is still meant to be for research purposes. A main point to note here is that no university software can be installed on a personally owned computer and won't be maintained by their IT department. 2. UNIVERSITY OWNED COMPUTER: with this option the student can buy the computer through their IT department, but the "expense approver", prior to any purchase, should be from MICDE. In this case, they can install University software, and IT departments should be able to maintain it. To clarify, “owned by the University” means that when the students leave they cannot take the computer with them, but it is for the Fellow's exclusive use while they are at Michigan.

MICDE fellows can use their fellowship awards to pay for services like high performance computing or equipment usage. Advanced Research Computing (ARC) offers HPC and research resources, storage and cloud services. At the Michigan Center for Materials Characterization (MC2) students can rent high resolution electron microscopes.
