MICDE Seminar: Miguel Bessa Associate Professor of Engineering, Brown University

November 16 @ 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm

1303 EECS

Miguel Bessa is an Associate Professor in the School of Engineering at Brown University. His research interests include computational mechanics and materials science, development of numerical methods, machine learning and optimization, multi-scale modeling of materials and structures.

Before joining Brown University Prof. Bessa was working in the Materials Science and Engineering Department at Delft University of Technology, where he was the director of an inter-faculty artificial intelligence lab called MACHINA, dedicated to machine intelligence advances for materials design. He is also the recipient of a 2019 Veni personal grant from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research. Prior to Delft, he was a postdoctoral scholar in aerospace at the California Institute of Technology, and he received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at Northwestern University as a Fulbright scholar in 2016. His research involves understanding and modeling materials at different scales in a new experimentally validated and self-consistent computational framework. He envisions a new era of design of materials and structures through machine learning.

Talk Title: Prof. Bessa’s talk title will be added soon.

The MICDE Fall 2022 Seminar Series is open to all.

This seminar is hosted by the Michigan Institute for Computational Discovery & Engineering (MICDE). Prof. Bessa will be hosted by Prof. Krishna Garikipati, Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Mathematics and Director of MICDE.

This is an in-person event, Zoom link will only be provided upon request.
